WHO Faces Significant Staff Reduction After United States Financial Pullout

This international public health organization has announced intentions to reduce its workforce by almost a quarter – amounting to over 2,000 positions – before mid-2026.

Financial Crisis Triggers Major Reorganization

This move follows after the US, previously the organization's biggest donor, withdrew financial support previously this period.

Washington was contributing approximately 18% of the organization's overall budget, causing a significant budgetary shortfall.

Expected Staff Reductions

Based on internal estimates, the workforce is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in January 2025 to around 7,030 by mid-2026.

This decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts includes staff reductions, retirements, and natural departures.

"This year was among the toughest in our history, as we have navigated a painful but necessary process of prioritisation and restructuring," stated the agency's director-general.

Financial Gap Remains

This Switzerland-headquartered organization now confronts a budget gap of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 biennium, representing nearly a fourth of its required budget.

This amount marks an reduction from a prior estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in May.

Not Included Funding

These financial projections do not include an additional 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from current negotiations with various donors.

The spokesperson for the organization noted that the current unsecured part of the biennial budget is in fact lower than in previous years, crediting this to several reasons:

  • A smaller total budget
  • The launch of a new donor outreach campaign
  • Higher in member states' required fees

The restructuring process is currently approaching its completion, allowing the organization to progress with a renewed structure.
