Tuchel Questions Wembley Fan Atmosphere Despite Emphatic Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel shared his regret that the Three Lions team did not enjoy greater support from the home crowd during their commanding 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
Tuchel was satisfied to see his squad continue their winning momentum, with finishes from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter effectively ending the match. Yet, he was not content with the mood at the national stadium.
“With limited training days to get ready against a well-trained team and we did very well,” Tuchel remarked. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get any energy back from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you give in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s disappointing because the team warranted more support today.”
“I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than leading three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a little more support in phases where it becomes tough.”
“In the second half, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to recharge, but that’s football and so be it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Display
Away from risking a dispute among supporters, the manager also created controversy by omitting Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. But the decision was backed up by Morgan Rogers delivering another standout performance in the No 10 position and getting his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” the head coach explained. “He is a No 10 and he is fighting for his spot.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Improvement from Loss
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that his team, who host a strong Belgian side in a key World Cup qualifier on next week, improve after their poor first-half display.
“That’s the reason I wanted this match,” the manager stated. “I need to see our standing. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? This performance gives me drive.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Watkins was substituted at the break after colliding with a goalpost and is a concern when the national team play Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
