'Those concluding hours tested every limit': UK duo complete extraordinary voyage in Down Under after rowing across the vast Pacific

One last sunrise to sunset. One more day up and down the pitiless slide. Another round of raw palms clutching relentless paddles.

However following over 15,000 kilometers at sea – a monumental half-year voyage across the Pacific that included near brushes with cetaceans, malfunctioning navigation equipment and cocoa supply emergencies – the ocean presented a final test.

Strong 20-knot breezes near Cairns kept pushing their small vessel, their rowing boat Velocity, away from solid ground that was now painfully near.

Loved ones gathered on land as an expected noon touchdown shifted to 2pm, subsequently 4pm, then dusk. At last, at eighteen forty-two, they reached the Cairns sailing club.

"Those final few hours were brutal," Rowe expressed, eventually on solid ground.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we truly doubted we would succeed. We ended up outside the channel and contemplated a final swim to land. To ultimately arrive, after extensive preparation, seems absolutely amazing."

The Extraordinary Expedition Starts

The British pair – aged 28 and 25 respectively – departed from Lima, Peru on May fifth (an initial attempt in April was halted by steering issues).

Over 165 days at sea, they maintained 50 nautical miles daily, rowing in tandem during the day, individual night shifts while her teammate dozed minimal sleep in a confined sleeping area.

Survival and Challenges

Kept alive with 400kg of mostly freeze-dried food, a water desalinator and an onboard growing unit for micro-greens, the pair have relied on an inconsistent solar power setup for only partial electrical requirements.

For much of their journey through the expansive ocean, they've had no navigation equipment or beacon, turning them into a "ghost ship", almost invisible to other vessels.

The pair have borne 9-metre waves, navigated shipping lanes and weathered furious gales that, on occasion, silenced all of their electronics.

Historic Accomplishment

Still they maintained progress, each pull following the last, across blazing hot days, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They have set a new record as the initial female duo to row across the South Pacific Ocean, continuously and independently.

Additionally they collected over eighty-six thousand pounds (179,000 Australian dollars) benefiting the outdoor education charity.

Existence Onboard

The duo made every effort to maintain communication with civilization away from their compact craft.

During the 140s of their journey, they reported a "chocolate emergency" – diminished to merely two remaining pieces with still more than 1,600km to go – but permitted themselves the luxury of opening one bar to honor England's rugby team triumph in global rugby competition.

Individual Perspectives

Payne, from a landlocked part of Yorkshire, lacked ocean experience until she rowed the Atlantic solo in 2022 achieving record pace.

She has now mastered another ocean. Yet there were periods, she conceded, when they feared they wouldn't make it. Starting within the first week, a route across the globe's vastest waters appeared insurmountable.

"Our energy was failing, the desalination tubes ruptured, yet after numerous mends, we achieved an alternative solution and just limped along with reduced energy during the final expedition phase. Each time problems occurred, we merely made eye contact and went, 'of course it has!' Still we persevered."

"Having Jess as a partner proved invaluable. Our mutual dedication stood out, we resolved issues as a team, and we were always working towards the same goals," she said.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Preceding her ocean conquest, she paddled the Atlantic, hiked England's South West Coast Path, ascended Mount Kenya and biked through Spain. There might still be more.

"Our collaboration proved incredibly rewarding, and we're already excited to plan new adventures collectively once more. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
