King Charles Formally Strips Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Prince Title

Through a decisive move, the reigning monarch has formally removed the former Duke of York of his HRH style and his princely title.

These alterations were made official by issuing royal documents under the official state seal, which were recorded in the Gazette.

The official notice stated: “His Majesty has been graciously inclined by royal instruments under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall cease to be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘HRH’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”

Another record affirmed the stripping of the dukedom from the peerage list, with immediate effect.

It read: “The king has been pleased to direct by royal warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his government minister to ensure the Duke of York to be struck from the peerage roll.”

Background of the Decision

The decision comes after increasing scrutiny over Andrew's connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the posthumous publication of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.

Giuffre alleged that she was assaulted by Andrew after being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, claims that Mountbatten Windsor has always strenuously denied.

Mechanism of Title Removal

The king utilized his royal prerogative—recognized rights held by the monarch—following discussions with Cabinet Office officials, rather than through legislative action.

Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to grant or revoke honors and styles.

Because the HRH style is granted by letters patent, it can be withdrawn through the same process.

Additional Actions and Backing

Following the initial announcement, the senior legal official was instructed to prepare the required paperwork for the title removals.

This action also includes Mountbatten Windsor relinquishing his tenancy on Royal Lodge, a 30-room Crown Estate property where he has lived for two decades.

Officials fully supported the king's decision.

Retained Honor

In spite of the stripping of honors, it was announced that Andrew will retain his Falklands service medal, granted for his service as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
