Hamilton Island, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment of the family owners has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, featuring a significant array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.

The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
