From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction process.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.

“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Release

However, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.

The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.

Yet a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.

“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Campaign Releases Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.

Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the files' release.

The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that contained no previously unseen data.
