FAI Passes Resolution Seeking European Football Ban on Israeli Teams

The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to submit a official proposal to Uefa, demanding the banning of Israeli football from all European club and international competitions.

Grounds for the Recommended Suspension

This motion, which was put forward by Irish side Bohemians, cited claimed violations by the IFA of two important Uefa statutes.

  • Inability to implement and enforce an proper policy against racism.
  • Establishment of football teams in disputed territories without the consent of the Palestrian FA.

Ballot Results and Next Steps

According to an official statement from the Irish FA, the proposal was backed by 74 votes, with 7 against and 2 not voting.

They intends to officially present this motion to the Uefa executive committee, seeking the prompt ban of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.

During a special assembly of the Football Association of Ireland, an ordinary resolution was put to delegates. It passed by a majority.

Earlier Uefa Deliberations

Uefa had earlier put on hold intentions to exclude Israel at the end of September, following the revealing of a US peace proposal for the region.

While Uefa never publicly stated considering an extraordinary meeting on the matter, plans were believed to be well developed.

International Backdrop

The FAI move comes after similar demands in September from the heads of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for Israel's suspension from international competition.

Those requests were made after UN specialists asked Fifa and Uefa to suspend Israel, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that claimed Israel of acts of genocide during the Gaza conflict.

The Israeli government has rejected these claims and described the findings as scandalous.

Potential Consequences

If Uefa choose to ban the IFA, it would probably create tension with the US administration – co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup – which strongly opposes such an action.

Although Uefa has the authority to exclude Israel or its clubs from European competitions, it might not be able to stop them from competing in World Cup qualifiers, which is governed by world football's governing body.
