A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which runs restaurants across the country and abroad.

"The year's tuna heralds good luck," commented the business owner, a notable participant at the annual January sale.

Referred to as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.

Auction Shock and Historic Past

After the auction, the winner told the press that he was "astonished at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This most recent acquisition tops his previous record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Despite once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his own record yet again.

A Tradition of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations throughout the country.

The high-energy energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a popular event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was quickly sliced up for customers at the bidder's sushi chains soon after the auction ended.

"I feel like I've begun the year in a good way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," said one elated diner.
