Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of play.

Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff victory over Fleetwood.

Final Round Excitement

Rai started the last day with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

The challenger moved one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.

Playoff Climax

That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Other Performances

The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
