A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Romance

Throughout this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous creature he expected.

A Forbidden Bond and Common Enemy

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people together. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be entitled sorts, prone to stealing anything they want, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

There aren’t all that many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have early romances, but are not old enough for whatever teenagers are watching in lieu of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
