2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. But, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are serious amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of unique mechanics.

A number of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet.

If these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
